  Dear List Serve Members,

  Wisconsin Heritage Online through WiLS and Minitex is sponsoring a set of four two-hour webinars focused on digitization information and skill development. We are holding two sessions in May; one in June and the last one in July. The sessions will be taught by Linda Stewart from OCLC Western, who is based in California. The sessions require broadband internet access and a phone line (800 number). We will send instructions prior to the meeting time for you to download the required applet. I will work with Linda Stewart to tailor the sessions to our Wisconsin cultural heritage institutions.

  If you would like to attend a session but do not have broadband internet access, please contact us before you register. We will either try to arrange access at a library near you, or provide contact information for someone registered at a location near you. WiLS will invoice registrants for payment. If you would like one invoice for all four sessions, register for all four sessions at once. See Added Information below.

  The first of these sessions, Developing, Funding and Managing Digital Projects was EXCELLENT!

  May 29 1-3 pm Copyright for Digital Materials

  This webinar is intended to introduce participants to issues surrounding copyright for digital materials, and to provide resources for further exploration. Topics covered include: basics of copyright law, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act; obtaining permissions to use, fair use, public domain, and privacy issues; how digital primary source materials published to the web differ from traditional materials. The course will include discussion of examples pertinent to the Washington Rural Heritage project to help participants apply concepts to real-life situations. What you will learn: An understanding of issues pertaining to copyright of digital materials including:

  How digital materials are similar to and different than traditional materials

  How to format policies for digital materials published to the web.

  June 12 1-3 pm Imaging, Quality Control and Digital Infrastructure

  This workshop covers basic level information on scanning, image capture and quality control activities for digital projects. Places emphasis on process development, and implementation for image capture and digital object creation in a project setting. Provides beginning steps toward developing and managing scanning activities for digital collections. What you will learn: The ability to make informed digital scanning decisions including:

  An understanding of image quality issues

  File formats & compression

  Image sizing, managing color

  Benchmarking & formulas

  Outsourcing vs in house capture decisions

  July 8 1-3 pm Metadata for Digital Projects

  Metadata is a fundamental element of any digitization project. Designed for noncatalogers, this webinar session focuses on using metadata to facilitate both access to and preservation of digital resources. Topics include: review of metadata schema choices, planning for a preservation metadata model, and using XML to store metadata. What you will learn: An understanding of what metadata is and how it facilitates access to and preservation of digital resources including:

  An awareness of appropriate metadata schema, including Dublin Core

  An understanding of current and developing standards

  Consideration of metadata workflows
