Tuesday, September 9, 2008 3-5 p.m. "Ninety Years Crossing Lake
Michigan" Author Presentation and Book Signing
In 1892, the Ann Arbor Car Ferries shook the transportation world by
doing what was then deemed impossible---carrying loaded railroad cars by
ship across the sixty-two miles of open water between Frankfort,
Michigan, and Kewaunee, Wisconsin. Ninety Years Crossing Lake Michigan
is a living history of the ships, the crews, and their adventures; of
the men who built and ran the business; and of the enormous influence
the vessels had on the communities they served. Author Grant Brown will
give a presentation at 3:00 and will be available to autograph his book,
which will be on sale in the Pier 75 Museum Store. There is no cost for
attending this program.
Saturday, September 20, 2008 1:30 p.m. "Centennial: Steaming Through
the American Century" Author Presentation and Book Signing
Chris Winters is a Milwaukee-based photojournalist specializing in Great
Lakes maritime subjects. He spent five years creating a vivid record of
life aboard the venerable Great Lakes steamboat S.S. St. Marys
Challenger as she approached the centennial anniversary of her maiden
voyage in 2006. Winters will sign copies of his book beginning at 10:30
a.m. and will give a presentation based on his book at 1:30 p.m. An
exhibit in the Riverside Gallery showcases some of the most vivid and
compelling photographs from the book. The book signing is free, but to
attend the presentation or view the exhibit, regular museum admission is
required.
