The Douglas County Historical Society (DCHS) invites the public to a
1943 USO Canteen variety show on Saturday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m. at
1101 John Ave. The USO show will be set as a 1943 radio broadcast with
news veteran, Lew Martin as well as comedians like "Bob Hope", singers,
such as "the Andrews Sisters" and dancers. Randy Lee and the Northland
Youth Music Program will provide swing music from the '40s. The hall in
DCHS will be decorated to look like a USO Hollywood canteen with
costumed servers at booths serving free sandwiches, donuts and coffee,
just as the USO canteens did during WWII. KUWS Radio 91.3 will record
and broadcast it on Monday, Dec. 8th. Commercials in the program will
be created from 1943 Telegram ads of businesses that still exist today
and are the event's sponsors: Superior, Water, Light and Power, Stack
Bros. Plumbing and Heating, NBC Bank Kari Toyota and the Superior
Telegram.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for the Palace Theatre Mural that will be painted on the exterior of the society's building the summer of 2009. Muralist, Brian Olson of Duluth has been hired to paint the mural. Tickets are now available at DCHS or at the door the night of the event. $10.00 per person. Veterans and men and women currently serving in the armed services who attend in uniform will be admitted free. For info, call 392-8449. Kathy or Barb
