SHEBOYGAN COUNTY HISTORCIAL MUSEUM
COLLECTIONS INTERNSHIP
Summer 2010
As part of the Strategic Plan adopted by the museum in 2008, the
Sheboygan County Historical Museum seeks an Intern to work with the
collection during the Summer of 2010. This intern will assist the
museum in working toward the goal of completing an inventory of the
museum collection of approximately 35,000 objects.
The recipient of this internship would concentrate on either the
museum's Native American, Furniture, or Prange's Animation collection.
Although the intern may choose which collection to work with, the
following duties will be key components regardless of subject area.
1. Record critical object data, including number, name,
description, overall condition, and available provenance.
2. Enter data into PastPerfect database.
3. Photograph objects for identification.
4. Other duties as related to the chosen collection, including
numbering, research, preparing items for storage, recording locations in
PastPerfect, and input regarding duplicate objects, Found in Collection
objects, and items that would complete gaps within the collection.
Applicants for this internship should be able to work independently with
little supervision and have excellent written and oral communication
skills. A background (either education or work) in museum studies,
along with an interest in history is preferable. Applicants must be
comfortable working with computers. Hours are somewhat flexible, but
the intern should plan on primarily working between 9 am and 4 pm on
weekdays. (The possibility of ride sharing from the Milwaukee area
exists.) A stipend (to be paid upon completion of 150 hours) of $600 is
available to an applicant who accepts this internship as part of college
coursework, continuing education, or independent study.
The Sheboygan County Historical Museum is dedicated to "the discovery,
collection, and preservation of information, records, and objects
relating to the history of the county of Sheboygan and the dissemination
of knowledge concerning the same." Embracing this mission, the museum
primarily serves the county's 116,000 residents, along with members of
the surrounding five counties through the maintenance of the four
historic buildings, a modern 20,000 square foot exhibit and storage
facility, and an exhibit restoration and storage center on the property.
In addition to period displays in the historic buildings, the museum
features exhibits related to Native American culture, the maritime
industries, and other important themes of county history.
Applicants should send a letter of interest, resume, and contact
