Spirits of Earth explores the cultural, historical and ceremonial
meanings of the mounds. With diagrams and maps the book takes a
close look at the entire Four Lakes landscape and the belief system
underlying mound construction. It also includes descriptions of
selected mound sites located where the public can view them.
Bob Birmingham served as Wisconsin State archaeologist at the
Wisconsin Historical Society for 15 years. He now teaches at the UW-
Waukesha and writes from his home in Madison.
