Special Cooperage Presentation

Everyone is invited to attend a special presentation on the cooperage trade at the Old Courthouse Museum. This informative evening takes place on Wednesday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m.

Featuring cousins Gary and Jim Hess, this multi-media presentation tells the story of the cooperage industry in Wisconsin and the Frank J. Hess Cooperage. Both Gary and Jim Hess are grandsons of Frank J. Hess, and possess collections of original artifacts that are part of the presentation.

In 1904, the Hess family opened their cooperage factory in Madison with the encouragement of Fauerbach Brewery, and became the largest independent cooperage in the state. They manufactured and repaired beer kegs for several breweries including the Storck brewery in Slinger. They also manufactured wine and whiskey barrels, and remained in business until 1966.

This special presentation also kicks off "Beer Week" at the Old Courthouse Museum. Attend this special presentation and receive a six-month free membership to the Washington County Historical Society. (This offer applies to new members only.)

Beer week also includes the grand opening of the newest exhibit at the Old Courthouse Museum - "Suds and Spirits." This special week ends on September 18 with the first annual "Brew Ha Ha." A unique beer tasting, this fundraiser includes beer tasting, wine tasting, gourmet treats, and live auction fun. Tickets are $30 per person and $25 for members. Call 262 335-4678 to order tickets.
