Medieval to Midway: Highlights from Tattooing's Past Friday, September 10, 6:30pm Waukesha County Museum (101 W Main St., Waukesha, WI)

Discover tattooing in Western cultures from the 1500s to the recent past.

From shipwrecked sailors to fur traders to religious pilgrims, Anna Friedma n Herlihy will reveal that Western tattooing has a longer and more complex history than is commonly believed. Amelia Klem Osterud (author of The Tatto oed Lady: A History and an article on tattooed lady Artoria Gibbons in a 20 06 issue of Wisconsin Magazine of History) will discuss tattooed ladies, a group of amazingly daring women, who went outside the social norms of the l ate 1800 and early 1900s to cover their bodies in tattoos and perform for a
 public audience. Bodypainter and photographer Shay Armstrong will demonstr ate her artwork and discuss her current research in body art and cultural c eremonies.

$1 for museum members or with student ID
$3 for general public
