Agency House to Host Civil War Photography Event
As part of our year-long commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Amer
ican Civil War, the Historic Indian Agency House of Portage will host a d
iscussion and demonstration of Civil War-era photography on Saturday, May
21 at 2PM. This family-friendly event is free to the public, due to the
generous financial support of the Great Circle Foundation, Inc., but d
onations are sought and will be gratefully accepted.
History enthusiast and photographer Glen Gorsuch of Step Back Studios will
discuss the history of photography and its role in the Civil War—the firs
t major American battle ever caught on film; a phenomenon that forever ch
anged the way we think about war.
Afterwards, visitors can lace up their hoop skirt or button their uniform
jacket, because Mr. Gorsuch will then be demonstrating the art of Civil
War-era photography by taking portraits in historically-accurate fashion wi
th his antique camera. Costumes will be on hand. (Please note that althoug
h spectators are welcome at no charge, a fee per photo does apply and Mr.
Gorsuch will be taking print orders that day.)
Visitors to the May 21st event will also be amongst the first to see the 20
11 special exhibit, “A Call to Arms: Wisconsin in the Civil War,” o
nly showing this season. This exhibit, graciously sponsored by Portage
’s Trans Works Transmissions, will feature a variety of Civil Wa
r-era photographs and genuine artifacts, as well as a replica of Indian A
gent John H. Kinzie’s Union Officer’s jacket.
The Historic Indian Agency House will open for its regular hours that day a
t 10AM and will remain open until 4:30, with guided tours of the 1832 mus
eum house available for a nominal fee.
This event is only the beginning of the site’s Civil War-themed year, w
hich will also include a speaker series, Kids’ Union Soldier Training C
amp and a September 11th performance of the acclaimed First Brigade Band.
