Historic Indian Agency House to Host
Children’s Native American Craft Workshop
The Historic Indian Agency House will host another installment of their pop
ular “Hands-On History” youth clinics on Saturday, July 16th. This f
un and educational workshop will concentrate on the Navaho tradition of San
d Painting. The Agency House, which sits on historic Ho-Chunk lands, ha
s a long Native history, making it a particularly appropriate setting to
share the arts and traditions of our country’s earliest inhabitants.
Participants will learn about the history of this Native art form and its c
ultural importance in the Southwest. The museum’s educational staff will
discuss what the paintings mean, how they were used, and how they were
made. Each young guest will then get the chance to create their very own s
and painting to take home.
Because of the expected high demand for this workshop, two sessions are b
eing offered, with a limit of 18 participants per session (10AM to 12PM a
nd 2PM to 4PM). All ages are welcome, but children younger than seven req
uire an adult or older sibling chaperone. The cost is $4 per person with re
servations strongly recommended, although not required. Please note that
Supporters Family members will receive a reduced rate of $2 per child.
Fittingly, this event is being held in conjunction with the 2011 Sand Cou
nty Fine Arts Festival. This gathering of artists and their wares will run
from 9AM to 5PM throughout Portage’s historic downtown. That day, the A
gency House will have a booth in Market Square promoting our site and its m
any events and programming opportunities—including this very Sand Paintin
g Workshop!
The Great Circle Foundation has generously provided supporting funds for th
is children’s event, directly in line with their mission to make innova
tive educational programming available to all.
The Historic Indian Agency House is owned and operated by the National Soci
ety of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Wisconsin. The site is
open to the public May 15 to October 15 annually, and hosts a wide varie
ty of adult and children’s programming throughout the year. Call Director
Destinee Udelhoven at 608-742-6362 with any questions or to make reservati
ons for the Sand Painting Workshop.
