New Holstein, WI: The New Holstein Historical Society has been named the ho
st for the 2011 Northeast Region meeting of the Wisconsin Council of Local
History. This year's meeting will be held on Saturday, August 6, at the Ne
w Holstein Community Center, Kiwanis Park. The day will begin with regist
ration and refreshments at 9am. Beginning at 9:45am, the Wisconsin Histori
cal Society will present and update on special activities and programs, fol
lowed by a presentation by the Wisconsin Council for Local History.
The morning featured presentation will be conducted by Rick Bernstein, Fiel
d Services, Southern Region Representative, Wisconsin Historical Society, w
ho lead a program on "Quality Exhibits on a Tight Budget." This program wi
ll provide tips and strategies to help improve exhibit programs while worki
ng within a tight budget. A Create Your Own Summer Picnic featuring a vari
ety of cold meats, Wisconsin Cheeses, potato salad, cold slaw, relishes, fr
esh fruit, summer beverages and homemade breads and desserts will follow th
e morning presentation.
The afternoon session will feature a unique presentation by John Jenkins, M
arion University, entitled: "Moonshining in the Holyland. Mr. Jenkins has
been researching this subject for many years and through the use of newspap
er articles, interviews, public documents and contemporary histories has di
scovered how the development of moonshining in the Holyland resulted from a
combination of economic necessity, the availability of the railroad, the d
emise of local cheese factories, and a strong German Roman Catholic heritag
e. The information included in the presentation covers areas of rural Calu
met and Fond du Lac counties beginning in 1924.
Registered guests attending the regional conference will also receive a com
plementary ticket to both the New Holstein Historical Society's Pioneer Cor
ner Museum and the Timm House that may be used on August 6th, or any other
day that the quest desires. Cost for the entire day's program, lunch and
tours is $20 per person. Reservations are required and may be made by con
tacting the Society at 920-948-7748 prior to Thursday, August 4, or by send
