At Wautoma we had a girl type up all the school and saved them on a floppy
disk as well as on a Windows 98 computer and printed them out. We put them
in a looseleaf notebook but people have to come to the museum to look at th
em. The files can be opened on another computer that has a USB flash drive
access and they will eventually be transferred to a computer at the public
library via flash drive.

Personally, I would try to scan them now and then grant only digital access
to them. The more you open them up, the more the ink will fade. Granted, t
he scanner will expose them to a very bright light, but that's a one-time e
xposure. Then it's just a matter of keeping the original cool, dry, and dar
k.

How does one preserve one room school ledgers from the 1860's on? The in
k
written material is still legible, but fading. Carol Anderson,
