With no eligibility requirements, no application, and no deadlines for completion, the new StEPs program is the perfect solution for history organizations that want to make improvements but do not feel ready for other assessment programs.
More than 300 museums, historical societies, and historic houses have already enrolled in the program. StEPs offers a new way for organizations to build credibility within their communities and with funders by connecting their goals, accomplishments, and funding requests to national museum standards.
“It was wonderful to see our hard work pay off when we earned a gold certificate in the Mission, Vision, and Governance section,” reports Charlene Orr, Executive Director of Historic Mesquite in Mesquite, Texas. “StEPs showed us we're on the right track and more importantly, it made our board of directors understand there's a reason why we have to pay attention to these things. The board was so excited to see our first certificate. It has motivated them to keep going and tackle the next section, she says.”
