What is Wisconsin Museums Week and International Museum Day?
* Wisconsin Museums Week and International Museum Day focus on a different
theme each year. The theme for 2012 is "Museums in a Changing World. New c
hallenges, New inspirations." Today, the world is changing faster than eve
r. New technology delivers new ideas, gigabytes of information, news of an
increasingly unstable climate. Wisconsin Museums Week and International Mus
eum Day will be an opportunity for visitors and museums to wonder about the
role of museums in our changing society, museums place in the era of new m
edia, and discover or rediscover how museums are looking to the future in t
erms of sustainable development.
* Since 1977, International Museum Day has provided a nucleus for museums'
creative aspirations and efforts and a focus for international attention o
n work done by museums. You can check out the IMD website at http://networ
k.icom.museum/imd2012
* Since 2006, Wisconsin Museums Week, a program sponsored by the Wisconsin
Federation of Museums (WFM), has been held in conjunction with Internation
al Museum Day and has provided Wisconsin museums an opportunity to promote
their institutions.
* Wisconsin Museums Week and International Museum Day are springboards for
initiatives that promote the work of our institutions to the public, draw
attention of supervisory bodies and governments to the role and needs of mu
seums, and foster dialogue between professionals and across disciplines.
* Wisconsin Museums Week and International Museum Day is your institution'
s chance to participate in a statewide celebration of Wisconsin museums by
either creating or incorporating existing programs into the week of May 12
through May 20. WFM will distribute printed materials (posters and bookmar
ks) to participating museums and promote Museum Week activities through its
website and communications.
In short, Wisconsin Museums Week is your institution's chance to join with
other museums and historical societies from around the state to highlight h
ow Wisconsin museums are meeting the challenges posed in our fast-past, tec
hnology heavy modern society, how they are reaching new and more audiences,
and interpreting current events. It is a week to show how museums are grow
ing and shaping their future.
Should my institution participate?

ms to the state of Wisconsin as well as local communities. Last year more t
han 40 Wisconsin museums participated, and WFM would love to have even more
for 2012!
