"Rightsizing Communities" symposium in Richmond

Beginning with the Gas Boom of the 1880s, large swaths of agricultural land
in eastern Indiana were transformed into major industrial centers. But the
gas ran out, post-boom manufacturing slowed, and today many manufacturing towns are dealing with the fallout.

On June 14, Indiana Landmarks partners with Richmond Columbian Properties, Inc. to present Rightsizing Communities through Historic Preservation: A Su stainable Approach to the Shrinking City. The day-long program offers solut ions for communities plagued by declining populations, high poverty rates, shrinking tax bases, lagging employment, and stagnant growth.

The symposium features Donovan Rypkema, a nationally recognized expert on t he real estate economics and preservation. Rypkema will present a new study
focusing on 20 older industrial cities currently dealing with "shrinking c ity" issues. Other speakers will highlight creative solutions, including la nd banking, economic development, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism
, and citizen participation.

City officials, community leaders, nonprofit managers and board members, an d neighborhood organizations will all find useful information among the sym posium sessions. Rightsizing Communities takes place at the William G. Scot t House, 204 N. 10th St., and two adjacent churches in Richmond, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person and include coffee, donuts, and lunch.
