Nancy,
The Northeast Document Conservation Center has technical leaflets online - see link below. This is a good article about cleaning books and shelves, as well as paper. Hope that helps! Janet

Subject: Old books
Our historical society has a number of old books dating back into the 1800's. The earliest being about 1870. We are keeping them in case we can use them for a display or projects. There are quite a variety including school books, literature, etc. My question to the listserve is should we try to clean up the covers of these old books? Most are really dirty. If so..what do we use?
