Know a Young Indiana Jones? Got a Kid Who Loves to Play in the Dirt?

The Historic Indian Agency House Announces ARCHAEOLOGY CAMP FOR KIDSESSAY CONTEST

The Historic Indian Agency House in Portage, Wisconsin, an 1832 historic site, is proud to announce that we will host an archaeology camp for kids this summer from June 16 to June 20. This five-day camp will be led by Rachel Stieve-Vertein, who holds a BS in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is funded through the generosity of the Great Circle Foundation.

The camp will center on an actual “dig” of a recreated archaeological site on the grounds of the Historic Indian Agency House—which sits on the traditional homelands of the Ho-Chunk tribe and has been the focus of numerous professional excavations. Students will be instructed in historical research and archaeological methods, using both hands-on and discussion activities. Some topics they will cover include conducting field surveys, setting up plots, utilizing test pits, excavating, making scale drawings, and processing artifacts.

Each participant will receive an archaeology field kit (that they will use for the duration of the camp and then be allowed to take home) and a t-shirt commemorating the camp.

The actual cost per student is estimated to be $250—but this opportunity will be offered free of charge to twelve lucky students who will enter grades six and seven during the 2014-15 school year. These students will be chosen based on a short essay contest on the topic, “Why Archaeology is Important.”

Essays are to be one page in length (or roughly 250 words, double-spaced), and, along with the registration form**, are due by Friday, May 02, 2014, via postal delivery or email submission. Essay contest winners will be notified on Monday, May 12. For more information, call Eleanor Voigt at 608-742-5029 or email historicindianagencyhouse@gmail.com .
