Mount Horeb Area Historical Society's
Jan. 30th Graduate Student Symposium
to Feature Fascinating "Secrets of Stuff"
From the
surprisingly clandestine history of a 1940s Badger Army Ammunition Plant ju
mpsuit,
to an intimate look at the folk art of recently-closed Little Norway, and
a
silent conversation with Society signature artifact, Debbie the Doll –
get a
glimpse of the “Secrets of Stuff,” at the upcoming Mount Horeb Area H
istorical
Society Student Symposium.
On January
30th in the upper level of the Mount Horeb Community Center (107 N
Grove St, Mt Horeb, WI), MHAHS will proudly host a history conference
featuring presentations
from six UW-Madison graduate students. “Secrets
of Stuff: AH865 Student Symposium” will run from 11:00am to 2:30pm.
Last fall, as
a requirement of Art History Course #865, Ann Smart-Martin’s Material C
ulture students
chose artifacts from the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society’s vast colle
ction
and researched the historical, cultural and social connections of their o
bject.
Under the
supervision and direction of Curator Johnna Buysse and volunteer Brian Bigl
er
(who has helped shape MHAHS’s collections since its 1975 inception), th
e
students examined and photographed their artifact and combed the Society ar
chives
for information about its owner and maker. They then placed this research i
n
the larger context of American history and culture –leading to intriguing
and
new connections. The student’s findings
underscored the value of the Society’s ongoing efforts to preserve these
irreplaceable remnants of American history.
Coffee and bottled
water will be available, with event guests encouraged to patronize Mount
Horeb’s outstanding downtown eating establishments or gift shops during t
he
scheduled lunch break.
Following
the final speaker, an optional “Behind-the Scenes Collections Tour” w
ill be
offered by Buysse and Bigler, to see the collection that so inspired the
students of AH865. This special tour
will include stops at the Society’s two main storage locations, both ju
st a few
blocks from the Community Center.
(Please note that, unfortunately, neither space is handicapped
accessible.) This special tour is free, with only ten guests allowed and
pre-registration required.
To view the
day’s schedule and for other event details, visit the Mount Horeb Area
Historical Society’s Facebook or web page or call 608-437-6486. To regis
ter for the Behind-the-Scenes
Collections Tour, call 608-437-6486 or email mthorebhistory@mhtc.net; r
egistrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve
basis.
