81 Years and 12,000 Acres: Land Conservation Advocate William Lunney to Discuss the Dane County Park System at Thurs, March 3 Library Event For generations, Dane County has been a stronghold of environmental stewardship, and the ever-expanding Dane County Park System is a testament to this eco-friendly sentiment. From the creation of the first park in 1935 (Mount Horeb’s own Stewart Park!), the System now boasts over 12,000 acres of protected land.

William Lunney, longtime advocate of conservation and Chair of the Dane County Parks Commission, will present an overview of the Dane County Park System’s history, the environmental principles on which it rests, the challenges it has faced and what the future holds at the Mount Horeb Public Library on Thursday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Lunney has participated in numerous conservation organizations, including the Dane County Parks Commission, the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and is co-founder of the Friends of the Capitol Springs State Park. He was recently honored by the Natural Heritage Land Trust with its Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in conservation, and also recognized by Dane County who named their Land Stewardship Fund in his honor.

Following Mr. Lunney’s presentation, he will be joined by representatives from Friends of Stewart lake Park and Friends of Donald Park. Larry Kruckman (Stewart Park) and Donna Thomas (Donald Park) will provide updates on the latest efforts of their associated volunteer groups and let us know how we can help preserve these ecological gems, while making them even better resources for our community.

This free community event is the final installment of a three-part, once-monthly series exploring the history and culture of Dane County. The “Discovering Dane” Speaker Series is a joint effort of the Mount Horeb Public Library and the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, with financial support generously provided by the Mount Horeb Rotary Club.
