The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society is proud to again offer a Native American Flute-making workshop for adults. This unique cultural experience will take place Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 under the leadership of instructor William Quackenbush.

This two-day workshop will include an introduction to the oral history of the Native American flute and its place in Ho-Chunk culture, as well as the crafting of a traditional-style wooden flute, totem and carrying bag. On the second day, participants will receive a tutorial on how to play their new flutes.

The class will be held in the beautifully restored District #1 Old Schoolhouse (owned and maintained by the Mount Horeb Landmarks Foundation), located at 110 North Second Street in Mount Horeb. Overnight lodging, if needed, is the responsibility of the individual.

Only 12 students will be accepted into the class on a first-come, first-serve basis. The $150.00 nonrefundable registration fee, which must be paid in full to ensure your registration, covers all materials needed to make the flute, totem and carrying bag, lunch for participants both days, room use fees and the instructor’s honorarium and travel expenses.

Registrants must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Due to the physical nature of some aspects of the flute-making process, registrants must be capable of working with simple hand tools to craft and finish the flute, totem and case.

Mr. Quackenbush is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and currently holds office as the Nation’s Cultural Resources Division Manager and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. In these roles, Mr. Quackenbush is charged with the weighty responsibility of protecting and preserving the Ho-Chunk culture and heritage, and nurturing this culture as a living source of identity and pride for tribal members. Furthermore, he serves as the Nation’s official Tribal Historian. Although this workshop is not formally associated with the Ho-Chunk Nation, it is still a rare opportunity to learn from a knowledgeable mentor and leader of the tribal community.
