Historian and Author Coming to Berlin to Present Program
Mark Walczynski is a historian and author who specializes in the French Colonial-Native American contact period in the western Great Lake regions. The partnership of the Berlin Area Historical Society and the Berlin Public Library is bringing this informative and entertaining speaker to Berlin on Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 p.m. at the Public Library to present ‘Completely Different Exactly the Same.’
The program examines the cultural, technological, and economic aspects of 21st century American lifestyles comparing them to those of the Native Americans who once inhabited this area. Surprising similarities abound. It is an upbeat and insightful program for all audiences.
Walczynski’s work has been featured in historical journals, magazines, books, and DVDs. He is retired from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Illinois Valley Community College. He is currently Park Historian for the Starved Rock Educational and Historical Foundation located at Starved Rock State Park at Utica, Illinois.
Mark first became acquainted with the Berlin area when he visited the Museum of Local History in Berlin, looking for information on the Mascouten, Miami and Kickapoo village that Fr. Marquette and Louis Jolliet visited in the spring of 1673. He was researching for an article he was writing on Fr. Marquette’s travels. The Berlin Historical Society was able to share a number of resources they have in their collection.
There is no charge to attend this program. The Berlin Public Library is located at 121 W. Park Ave. (the corner of W. Park and N. Pearl St.)
