ill historical marker to be dedicated and unveiled April 29Iola’s r
ich ski-jumping history extends back to 1909’s School House Hill Sk
i Jump and the following year’s formation of the Iola Ski Club (now
known as Iola Winter Sports Club) – making it one of the oldest sk
i-jumping clubs in the country.A new jump was built in 1911 northeast of to
wn on land that is now Glacier Woods Golf Course. Referencing a slaughter h
ouse built directly to its east, Slaughter House Ski Hill was competitively
active as the Iola Ski Club’s tournament site for only two years,
being succeeded in 1913 by the Knutson Hill, built on the Clarence Knutson
farm two miles southeast of Iola near Black Lake. Although the Slaughter Ho
use Ski Hill’s last scaffolding remains were removed more than 50 y
ears ago, its namesake structure survives, located in the out-of-bounds are
a between the second and fourth fairways, serving the golf course as a supp
lies storage and maintenance building. The Iola Historical Society will be
unveiling Historic Iola No. 13 – Slaughter House Ski Hill on Monday
, April 29, at 4:oo p.m. at Tee #2. Attendees should park in the parking lo
