Hello from Platteville!

We are in the process of assessing our framed art collection. We have alrea dy removed some artworks from their frames for improved preservation of tho se pieces. In many cases we have also removed the backing from the frames a s the materials are not archival and have led to staining and acid burning of the artworks or were in such a state that they could not be salvaged (ma ny of the backing boards have been wood, Masonite, corrugated cardboard, et c. that was broken, stained, or warped).

As a short-term solution to keep the frames and glass intact, we have been re-inserting the nails used to hold the frames together and securing it wit h tape. If anyone has recommendations for the methods and materials used to
replace the mat and backing boards, it would be much appreciated! I have b een doing some research and price-checking on materials but would welcome a ny suggestions.

Thank you!

Rachel Vang

Most photos are placed in frames that will, over time, harm the photo withi n them, and we too, have limited storage space. I place all photos in Arch ival Photo envelopes, which go into archival boxes. We have 7,000 cataloge d photos, which all fit on one shelf unit.

Before inserting the photographs, I mark each envelope across the top with
(from L to R:) People's names; Subject, place, or landmark are written at the center, and Object ID on the far right.

We have five box sizes: 4 x 5; 4 x 6; 5 x 7; 8 x 10; and 11.5 x 14.5" A nything larger goes into the flat file. They are filed by Object ID number s instead of subject to avoid confusion. Each is cataloged and scanned. W e have requests for the originals only once in a while.

Mounted prints and prints I can not remove from paper/cardboard frames are also placed in the envelopes and filed in boxes.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other qu estions, Becca

I appreciate that original frames have historical value, BUT, what if t hey are in bad shape or they are the very deep style that takes up the spac e of 5 other frames? We have very limited space constraints and miniscule storage. I am considering moving our large format portrait photos to archival sleeve s. Any guidance would be appreciated.
