Robert Laplander is considered to be the world's leading authority on Charl
es Whittlesey and the Lost Battalion. Charles Whittlesey was born in Floren
ce and lived in that community for the first ten years of his life. Lapland
er will speak about Whittlesey, the Lost Battalion and current activities r
elated to WWI. The Florence County Historical Society is privileged to host
Mr. Laplander on Saturday, September 18th at 3:00 PM in the Encore on Cent
ral, 748 Central Avenue, Florence, WI. Laplander is a member of the Great W
ar Association, The Western Front Association, The League of World War One
Aviation Historians, and is co-president of the American Expeditionary Foun
dation. A former semi professional singer and songwriter, he also teaches e
arly 20th century military history and tactics in the Headquarters Company/
339th Battalion of the Wisconsin Military Cadet Explorer program. Finding t
he Lost Battalion is his first book. A second book will be coming out soon.
