Friends,

Please mark your calendars for January 28 & 29, 2005, when the Eau Claire Friends Meeting (Quakers) is sponsoring a Draft Counseling Training public presentation and workshop.

On Friday night, January 28th, J.E. McNeil, a lawyer with the Center on Conscience and War will be giving a public presentation about the military draft, including up-to-date info on the likelihood of draft activation and how to be prepared for it. Participants will learn about addressing militarism in our schools, the "economic draft" of poor and disadvantaged youth and various issues affecting those currently serving in the military. This will be at 7 PM at the Phillips Auditorium at UW-EC.

On Saturday, January 29th, J.E. McNeil will lead a 9am-5pm training session for draft counselors, to be held at L.E. Memorial Library in Eau Claire. Trainees will also attend the Friday night session.

It is tentatively planned for J.E. to speak at Eau Claire Memorial H.S. on Friday, and she is available to speak in the early afternoon on Sunday, the 30th, by advance arrangement.

The Quaker meeting is sponsoring the training in order to create a network of local individuals who could to help young men and women examine their personal values, provide conscientious objector counseling to young people of registration age and their families, and be available to speak to schools and community organizations upon request. Further definition of these programs will be worked out with those completing the training.

The Friday night public event is open to all, and the Saturday training is available for 15-30 individuals by pre-registration. The cost of the Saturday training is $40 per person with some scholarship aid available.

Information on the Center on Conscience and War can be found at www.nisbco.org <http://www.nisbco.org/> .

We welcome your help in preparing for this event in any of the following ways:

1. Let us know of your interest in registering for the Saturday training. 2. Please pass on the information to interested folks - in your bulletin, e-mail lists, etc. 3. Those willing to help in other ways - connections with school or students, other speaking venues, etc - are encouraged to contact us with their offers and requests.
