Subject: Northwoods Peace Initiative--Sami Rasouli Tour in MN and WI
Dear Peacemakers,
An extraordinary opportunity has come our way. A speaker who represents
a rare convergence of nationality, religion, and ethnicity that speaks
to the most pressing issues of the day is coming to the Northwoods to
share his perspective and wisdom. Sami Rasouli is an
American/Iraqi/Shiite/Muslim/Arab/Satyagrahi
<http://www.superiorbroadcast.org/SamiRasouli.htm> working in Iraq to
promote non violent solutions in one of the most chaotic geographies on
the planet.
Sami came to the United States almost thirty years ago to seek medical
treatment for his deaf son. He ended up in Minneapolis where he became
an eminently successful businessman. He operated Sinbad's, a
market/restaurant that was honored on an almost annual basis, as one of
the most successful Middle Eastern food establishments in the Twin
Cities.
During the 1990's he became an outspoken opponent of both the war and
sanctions against Iraq. The Twin Cities peace community would gather
regularly at his store where, during times of crisis, they would gather
around the TV watching Arab news channels from all over the world while
Sami would translate. He also was a frequent speaker at rallies, forums,
and in the media.
When he was finally able to return to Iraq after the March 2003
invasion, the conditions there became too much for him to bear. He sold
his business and moved back to Iraq to do whatever he could to help in
the rebuilding of his country. There he became acquainted with the
Christian Peacemaker Teams <http://cpt.org/> an NGO promoting non
violent solutions to the chaos all around and he followed their lead
forming the Muslim Peacemaker Teams.

tnG
=Google+Search> He now works with MPT and Kerbala Human Rights
Watch
monitoring human rights violations and employing non violent techniques
that attempt to bridge the deep cultural chasms of a largely tribal
society that the West cannot fathom.
So...Sami is with us for two months after which he is going back to
Iraq. Please take a look at the calendar below. You will want to do
everything you can to get to one or the other of his events. Some of
them are classes in high schools and colleges which are not open to the
public. The evening events are all open and free of charge although we
will be passing the hat to raise money for Sami's work in Iraq.
He also has with him a limited number of original Iraqi paintings that
are for sale. The proceeds go both to the artists and to the work of
MPT.
Please promote these events to your email lists if you are even remotely
close to where Sami will be speaking.
cheers,
Mike and Barb
