From: "Pope, Karen O." <POPEKJ@uwec.edu> Date: Fri, 17 Jul 2009 09:46:33 -0500 Subject: MONTHLY EAU CLAIRE IRAQ/ AFGHANISTAN STAND TODAY JULY 17 4-6 Message-ID: <4F19260FE7477F4DA03B00B62E7F639076C7F8E80D@CHERRYPEPSI.uwec.edu>
FROM LOU RECINE, A REMINDER!!
IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL TO HAVE A LARGE GROUP TODAY. WOMEN IN BLACK SIGNS/BA
NNER WILL BE THERE.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO CALL OR EMAIL FED. LEGISLATORS.
WHAT: Public demonstration to express desire to see US military
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan ended
WHERE: Corner of Bracket Avenue and Business US Hwy 53 (right next to
Jimmy Woo's - now called Red Parrot).
WHEN: Friday, July 17...come for as long or short as you like between
4pm to 6pm.
If at all possible, bring a sign (small or large), but others will
likely be bringing signs, so don't let a lack of having a sign prevent
you from coming!
Whether you can come or not, PLEASE - ON FRIDAY, JULY 17- call or email
your federal Wisconsin Senators and your Representative and let them
know you want them to work to bring our troops home from Iraq and
Afghanistan!
Even if you believe that our troops, working as they do with NATO and
Afghan troops, should be in Afghanistan, at least tell your legislators
of your concerns about the WAY we're conducting the war / occupation.
What do I mean? Last December, the UN released a report, which according
to the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7894233.stm) said that
39% of civilian deaths in Afghanistan in 2008 were caused by US, NATO,
and Afghan forces.
Of these deaths, according to the BBC report, 2/3 "died in air strikes
targeting militants, sometimes at night."
See further below (under my signature lines) for info on how to contact
your legislators. To the best of my knowledge, the phone numbers are
accurate.
Lastly: I'd like to recommend to you a brief (11 min.) video which just
this morning I watched - "The Women of Afghanistan". It is Part 5, and
the most recent of a series of videos created by Brave New Foundation,
who are also the folks who do the http://rethinkafghanistan.com site.
You can see the video at: their site and also on You Tube at:
