List Serve Members,
I've asked someone from Library-Archives division at WHS to respond to the
archive vs reference question, so I'm sure you'll see their response
shortly.
I would mention that although the final conference brochure is not finalized
yet, there will be a half-day workshop at the September 26-27, 2008 Annual
Conference in Madison that will focus on planning and managing archival
collections. Look for that brochure in your mailbox a bit later this summer!
Best,
Janet

I've been meaning to ask a similar question about what we have. We have
records that businesses have given us to preserve after they went out of
business. What about our own organization?
As we were cleaning one day, we found several old paid invoices from our
museum shop and from services we used for daily operations. These are maybe
20 or 30 years old. Do we make sure there's a report stating how much we
paid for merchandise sold in the museum shop or keep the paid invoice
copies? If someone were to research the Douglas County Historical Society's
operations 50 years from now, would the reports be enough, or will the
original "primary reference resource" material be of use? Or, should we
save reports and an example of the bills that came in? Since our society
has been around for over 100 years, you can imagine how much "stuff" has
accumulated.

What is the difference between an archive and reference materials?
