Gallery Opening
The community is cordially invited to the grand opening of the newest
gallery at the Washington County Historical Society Tuesday September 16,
7:00 p.m. at the Old Courthouse Museum. " From Plumb-Bobs to GPS, The
History of Surveying" presents the history of surveying from 1700 to the
present day. This special evening also features a presentation by former
president of the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors Lisa Van Horn and
Surveyor Scott Schmidt.
Van Horn and Schimdt will speak on the history of surveying in Wisconsin and
Washington County. Surveying has a long and rich history that has impacted
politics, economics, and society in general. For thousands of years
surveyors have played an important role in locating property boundaries and
land features. The surveying of Wisconsin townships, ranges and sections
began in the mid 1800's, and continues today.
This history is also represented in the exhibit. Featuring surveying from
the 1700's to the present day, the gallery offers hands on fun to
information regarding U. S. presidents who were also surveyors. This is a
wonderful opportunity to learn about this important, but understated field.
This special evening is free and complimentary refreshments will be served.
