You are invited to join me next Tuesday, December 9 at 1:30 pm for a guided tour of The Finest in the Western Country at the Milwaukee Art Museum. This exhibition features furniture, textiles, ceramics and metalwork made by early Wisconsin craftspeople. 40 objects from the collections of 21 museums, local historical societies and private individuals across the state are featured, including . . .

-an intricately inlaid fork made by Green Bay blacksmith Joseph Jourdain in 1823, from the Neville Public Museum of Brown County

-the only known intact coverlet made by Milwaukee weavers Mealey and Leity, on loan from the Elmbrook Historical Society in Brookfield

-Ho Chunk, Ojibwe and Menominee finger-woven yarn bags and beaded bandolier bags, lent by the Wisconsin Historical Society

-a six-legged rocking chair handmade by Finnish immigrant Heikki Saukko, from the Douglas County Historical Society, Superior

-ceramic artist Susan Frackelton's monumental punch bowl exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, on loan from the Milwaukee County Historical Society
