After
eight months of hard work by our Schools Committee and the wonderful
cooperation from many Waterloo area residents, we have finished the school
book. Over 40 area people contributed pictures and stories.
Titled
Historic One-Room, One-Teacher Schools in the Waterloo Area, its 104 pages i
nclude 21 school
districts – from Abendroth to Youker.* Most of them started in the 1
840s and
1850s and continued until consolidation in Waterloo and Portland Townships,
and
parts of Milford, Elba, Medina and York.
Nostalgic
and documentary, it is abundantly illustrated and over 1600 names of former
students,
teachers and school officers are listed.
Cost
is $15. (if mailed, add $5 and order at WAHS, P. O. Box 52, Waterloo WI 5359
4).
The
debut20is at Building 129 N. Monroe, former Coffee Station on Saturday, Dece
mber
6, from 10am – 4pm, just in time for holiday gifts.
Also at the holiday sale are:
Homemade
bakery goods from local kitchens.
Numerous
bargain items of Christmas décor.
Other
publications like the extraordinary Homecomings (old settlers) Book and the
terrific Waterloo
Sesquicentennial Calendar with dozens of vintage photographs. Running throug
h March
of 2010, it is the finest historic Waterloo calendar ever produced.
* The full list of districts covered includes all schools in
Waterloo and Portland townships, one each in Milford, Elba and Medina, and t
hree
in York Township as follows: Waterloo village, Little White, Abendroth, Isla
nd,
Jordan, Kypke, Stony Brook, Faville, Hubbleton, McCormick, Goebel, Gaffney,
Cold Spring, Portland village, Youker, Whipple, Pershing, Smith, York Center
,
Lone Oak, and Shady Lawn (Andrews). These are the schools that furnished
students to Waterloo High School before consolidation.
