Since copyright law is complicated and we cannot provide legal advice, WHS and the Field Services staff will usually suggest that seeking some legal counsel is the best course of action.
These particular items are not official school records, but do keep in mind that those types of records may have certain restrictions and you should contact WHS staff if there is a question about public access to official school records that may contain personal information.
Finally, it is always important to consider your historical society's reputation and the public's opinion, especially in a small town! If your board feels that it is an important step to try to make a good faith effort to contact former students who might be involved, you can certainly decide to do so, even if you were not legally required to do so.
  Thanks, Janet

Our Historical Society has received a donation from a former school teacher (now deceased) of about 12 pages of individual assignments, each written by school children in 1935 about local area businesses. An officer in the Historical Society would like to present at the next meeting, the possibility of making copies of these papers and putting them in a spiral bound books to offer for sale. The question is, would this require a consent from the students/descendants?. The form presented to the donor to sign did not indicate any stipulations .... As far as I know ... Thanks for any suggestions. ? ? ?? ?
