The instructors will discuss all aspects of a long-range salvage operation
including an overview of various disasters and their effects on different t
ypes of materials; prioritizing salvageable artifacts; materials needed for
a salvage operation; handling damaged artifacts; methods of drying various
types of artifacts; pros and cons of various methods of freeze drying; pre
venting mold outbreaks; simple cleaning procedures that staff may carry out
; types of damages that require a professional conservator; labeling affect
ed artifacts; time factors involving recovery and salvage; recording recove
ry efforts; and the impact of salvaging collections on other museum operati
ons.
How to Develop Successful Youth Programs

Museums bring unique assets to youth education, including specialized knowl
edge, real artifacts, hands-on interaction, and experiences that make learn
ing fun and rewarding. This workshop will showcase a variety of youth prog
ramming in museums, including Scouts, K-12 school field trips, summer camps
, after-school, and event programs. We will examine the philosophy behind
youth programming, review trends in the field, share best practices, provid
e program ideas and guidelines, survey potential community collaborations,
and discuss how to evaluate a program’s success. This workshop will be v
aluable especially to smaller museums and historical societies and to entry
-level educators.

is has traveled around the state helping small historical societies grapple
with their clothing collections. She has learned what questions staff at t
hese institutions ask and what they want to know. In this workshop Ms. Bell
ais will answer these questions for a wider audience. Topics covered will i
nclude identifying what we have, deciding what we should collect, numbering
and cataloging, dating women’s clothing, and mounting garments, especial
ly Victorian dresses, for exhibits on a budget. Attendees are welcome to br
ing up to two items for Ms. Bellais to identify or date.
