Subject: LSRHA ANNUAL BANQUET – STEAM IN THE LAND OF THE GLACIER

Lake States Railway Historical Association will host its second annual members meeting and banquet on Sunday, April 26 at the Baraboo Arts Center, 323 Water Street with the theme “Steam in the Land of the Glacier.” Doors to the exhibit area will open at 10:00 AM followed by a luncheon buffet to be served at noon. A brief state-of-the-Association report will be given by LSRHA President Dick Goddard following the luncheon. Immediately thereafter will be the featured speaker of the afternoon, famed Baraboo historian and writer Mark Carlson, who will present a remarkable program titled “The Chicago & North Western Railway: Steam Era in the Baraboo River Valley.” A discussion period will follow Mr. Carlson’s slide presentation.

The focus of this audio-visual presentation will be on the historical presence in the Baraboo area of the Chicago and North Western Railway during the steam era that began with the acquisition of the Baraboo Air Line route by the C&NW and its arrival in Baraboo in 1871 through to the end of its last steam locomotive in Baraboo in April, 1956. The story will include the monumental geographic challenges faced in bringing the rail line to the Baraboo River valley from Madison, connecting short lines, and the economic impact and development the railroad brought to the region. Special emphasis will be placed on the relation of the railroad with scenic Devil’s Lake, local mining, Ringling Brothers Circus, and the Badger Munitions Plant.

Historical exhibits on view will include intriguing artifacts, photos, and drawings relevant to the topic of the day as well as a unique operating steam-era model railway display. The menu for the luncheon will feature hickory barbeque pork loin, baked chicken, parsley buttered potatoes, glazed carrots, tossed salad, and dessert.

All are welcome to attend this educational event. Banquet reservations are priced reasonably at $25 per person or $22.50 each for groups of two or more attendees. Reservations may be secured by mailing a check or money order by April 18 to: Lake States, 319 Water Street, Suite 800, Baraboo, WI 53913. Your banquet tickets will be waiting for you upon your arrival. The Baraboo Arts Building is located at 323 Water Street in Baraboo, which is just west of the main entrance for the Circus World Museum. For additional information, please phone 608-356-5555 or 608-522-3331.
