FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

AGENCY HOUSE KICKS OFF SEASON BY UNVEILING NEW EXHIBIT

Although Portage's Historic Indian Agency House officially opens to the public on May 15 (just as it has for o ver 75 years), their first event of the season will take place Wednesday, May 13. At this time the public is invited to catch a sneak peek of the Agency House
’s newest exhibit, “Functional and Fanciful: Pottery in Early America.” The highlight of the display is a remarkable collection of American Rockingham ware, on generous loan from an Agency House friend. This type of pottery
, which dates back to the early 19th century, is a popular collector’s item. The exhibit features some of the most sought-after examples of Rockingham ware—dramatic pitchers ornamented with hunting scenes.

The doors open at 5PM with plenty of time to take in the exhibit and even a guided house tour before t he 7PM featured speaker takes the stage. Emily Pfotenhauer, a researcher wit h the Wisconsin Historical Society, will offer an illustrated presentation of e arly Wisconsin potters and their wares. Additionally, light refreshments
will be provided to all guests. This pre-opening event is free to the public (altho ugh the guided tour fee still applies).

In celebration of the 2009 focus on ceramics, local potter Liz Gregory (who owns Portage-based Functional Pottery) was commissioned to produce Agency House-inspired wares. Gregory studied original artifacts in the collection, then molded and hand-painte d mugs, pitchers, and plates in a mocha ware style. These one-of-a-kind w orks will be on sale in the gift shop while supplies last.

The Historic Indian Agency House has a variety of events for all ages planned for the 2009 season. Call Executive Director
Destinee Udelhoven at 608-742-6362, or refer to the Portage Chamber of Commerce website for fur ther information.

Hope to see you all there!
