Girl Power - 1940's Style

Girls in 2nd through 5th grades are invited to the Old Courthouse Museum to celebrate Women's History Month with "Girl Power - 1940's Style." Featuring women's role on the home front during World War II, this fun morning event includes Victory Gardens, jitterbugging, Movie Tone Newsreels and many other blasts from the past. "Girl Power - 1940's Style" takes place Saturday, March 13, from 8:45 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. This fun activity is presented by the Washington County Historical Society, The West Bend Library, and the UW-Extension.

While GI's bravely fought overseas in WWII, girls joined family efforts on the home front to assure victory. Through authentic artifacts and stories, today's girls will get a glimpse of life that included sacrifice and ingenuity. Find out about rationing and shortages, and how growing a
"Victory Garden" was an important part of the war effort.

Girls will also have the opportunity to learn "The Jitterbug," with Professor Michael Mattek. Professor Mattek teaches ballroom dance at the University of Wisconsin-Washington County, and will have participants
"Jumpin' and jiving" to the lively beat of 1940's music. There is also an introduction to newsreels, listening to vintage radio broadcasts and snacking on applesauce cupcakes. Crafts from the era will also be featured including piecing together a paper quilt square and stitching a "situpon."

Enrollment for "Girl Power - 1940's Style" is only $15 per girl and includes the program, materials and snacks. Girls are encouraged to dress in 1940's era outfits. Visit www.historyisfun.com and download the enrollment form or call Jessica at the Washington County Historical Society at 262-335-4678. A Sibling discount is available.
