Subject: Question About Handling and Preserving Technical Drawings

Question: Lake States Railway Historical Association has a large collection of technical drawings (about 2000), most of which have been quite tightly rolled around a piece of 1/2 " wooden dowel with the drawing number inked on the end of the dowel. Many of the drawings are large, ranging in size from 20" x 102" to 17" x 42" & down to 8" x 11". The drawings range from linen, blueprints or vellum paper. The railroad these drawings are from used this rolled drawing storage system, then stored them in home made pigeon hole cabinets, in a vault.. Many of the drawings are over 100 years old. We have now cataloged the drawings and want to store them in flat files for easier handling and referencing but question the best way to unroll and flatten these drawings.
