Living History Encampment
Experience the sites, sounds, and tastes of early 1800's Wisconsin at the
Living History Encampment Family Day Saturday, May 8. This free event is the
only outdoor history encampment in Washington County and will take place at
the Old Courthouse Museum in Downtown West Bend from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Sponsored in part by West Bend Noon Kiwanis, this event features historical
reenactors demonstrating life as it may have been for the early residents of
Washington County. Hear the clang of the hammer hitting the anvil as you
watch a Blacksmith ply his trade. Learn about spinning and dyeing wool to
create colorful cloth. Meet a Flintknapper and find out why his trade was
so important to early settlers. Visitors are encouraged to mingle with the
reenactors and get a first person understanding of the era.
Living History Encampment Family Day is part of a three-day school program
held each year. Over 550 area school children visit the encampment and have
the opportunity to interact with history in action. Because of the
popularity of this venture, the May 8 event is a way for the community to
enjoy a unique look at the past.
