We are a small museum in Mukwonago which has a house museum, a wing of native American collection and a small log cabin outbuilding which we use as a gift shop. The village owns the buildings and maintains the grounds. In addition they pay the heat, light, water, insurance, telephone and security. While we have increased our membership we would not be able to maintain the buildings if we did have to pay for these items. The Public Works department maintains the lawn and helps with minor repairs. We also have a fund from the village for improvements. While it is a modest amount of $5000.00 it does help with unexpected repairs. The society owns and maintains the artifacts and we pay for programs, internal improvements, painting etc. You do want to consider applying for grant dollars as expenses that you don't think about do pop up. We have received over the past 5 years $30,000 in grant dollars. We also do not charge any admission finding that we did better with donations. If you are not a 501c3 think about applying for tax exempt status as this will help donors who may give over $250.00. Hope this helps, good luck
