Over 500 Middle and high school students will participate in the National H
istory Day state competition held on Saturday, May 4th. They will be compe
ting for the chance to move on to the national contest in Washington D.C. a
nd we need volunteers to help.
Volunteering at a National History Day event is a rewarding experience. Jud
ges work on panels of three to interview students, provide feedback on stud
ent work, and select finalists in one of five categories: paper, website, e
xhibit, performance, and documentary. All events are held in the Pyle Cente
r and Grainger Hall on the UW-Madison Campus.
Training is provided for all judges on the day of the competition and meals
are provided. Questions? Contact the state coordinator.<http://www.wiscons

You Can Help Make the National Contest Possible for a Deserving Student!
Most families will cover the costs of these expenses of the NHD National Co
ntest on their own. Costs range from $650 to $800 per student. Each year, h
owever, there are students in the state that need a little extra help in ma
king the trip to the national contest possible. For some of our past schola
rship recipients—the trip to nationals would not have been possible witho
ut our help!
The Adopt a Scholar program will offer several need-based scholarships to n
ational finalists, to help cover the cost of food, lodging, and the registr
ation fee for the contest for selected students. We currently have the fund
s to support housing and food for just one Wisconsin student!
How Can You Help?
Students earning a spot at the national contest represent the top 1% of all
History Day students in the state and have done months of hard work. We wa
nt all students in the state that have earned this honor, regardless of the
ir financial situation, to be able take advantage of this opportunity and t
o share their scholarship with other young historians from across the count
ry. This experience will be one that they remember for the rest of their li
ves and the enthusiasm and knowledge they bring back from the national cont
est will serve to strengthen the program at their own school.
Enough small donations from judges, volunteers, and other supporters in the
state can have a big impact on a student's ability to attend the contest.
Consider:
-$100 will pay a student’s registration fee for the contest
-$30 will pay for one day of food in the University of Maryland dorms
Any amount of assistance, large or small, will be appreciated by these youn
g historians!
Donations must be received by Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Donations can be made
payable to the “Wisconsin Historical Foundation” with “National Cont
est Scholarship” written in the memo line. Please return donations to the
