Mount Horeb Area Historical Society Seeking
Recruits for Civil Training Camp for Kids
The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society (MHAHS) is commemorating the
150th anniversary of the close of the American Civil War, whose
effects upon our country still resonate, with a Civil War-themed weekend
of
activities on June 6 and 7. The planned events, a children’s day camp a
nd
outdoor concert, add even more variety to the 9th Annual Spring Art
Tour (a successful undertaking of the Mount Horeb Area Arts Association) th
at
takes place the same weekend.
In association with the Society’s Civil War weekend, we are looking
for soldiers ages 8 to 12 to take part in a one-day Civil War Training Camp
educational
program. The camp will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.
m. at
Grundahl Park in Mount Horeb. Only 30 recruits will be accepted, with
reservations currently being taken and accepted on a first-come, first-se
rved
basis until the roster is full. A nonrefundable fee of $40 covers lunch and
all
camp supplies, including a Union soldier’s hat, haversack, wooden m
usket,
canteen and other activity materials—all of which will go home with soldi
ers at
the end of the day.
Young recruits will be divided into companies, taken through the paces
of musket drills and marching in formation by an experienced Civil War educ
ator,
and take part in a variety of period activities, such as the art of the
“wig-wag” (or flag signals) and writing letters home. Participants will
even
get to sample historically accurate, homemade hard tack and beef jerky,
the resilient
(if difficult to digest) staple of any Civil War soldier’s diet.
Additionally, each soldier will start the day by being assigned the
persona of an actual Wisconsin Civil War veteran, and learn their histori
c fate
at the close of the camp: Did they make it home to their family? Did they
perish on the battlefield? Did they succumb to an infe
ctious disease
like malaria or typhoid fever?
This immersive experience will be designed to provide children with a
glimpse of the rigors and discipline of military training, and the lonely
and
often monotonous life in a Union Army Camp.
Although parents and chaperones are not excluded from observing the
camp, the Society encourages adults to consider dropping off recruits and
taking the opportunity of a kid-free day to participate in the Spring Art T
our
or explore the vibrant Mount Horeb downtown.
All professional staff and volunteers are carefully screened and excited
to bring history to life for area youth.
All training camp participants, their parents or guardians and the
general public are also invited to a free outdoor concert by the acclaimed
1st
Brigade Band, to be held on Sunday, June 7 at 1 p.m. at the future site
of the
Mount Horeb Area Historical Society’s Heritage Center, 106 S. Second St
. in
Mount Horeb (directly across from the Grumpy Troll Pub & Brewery). Guests
are asked to bring their own chairs or blankets.
The 1st Brigade Band is an homage to the Brodhead Brass
Band, which enlisted in the Union Army in 1864 and served under the famou
s Gen.
William T. Sherman. The band makes this intriguing history come alive by
presenting period brass music, performed on antique instruments, while
attired
in 1860s era uniforms and gowns.
