The Monroe County Local History Room was offered a wood pulpit that once was
associated with a Monroe County church. The church closed and was
demolished sometime in the 1980s. It is unknown when the pulpit was
constructed but a late 19th c. date is probable.
As you will see in the attached pictures of the pulpit, it is lacking a
finish. A furniture restorer confirmed that it was originally painted a
light color (ebony?) and was subsequently stripped and coated with a light
covering of poly. In its current condition we do not deem it appropriate
for our collection because it lacks its original finish. We have no more
storage room and so we have to be very particular when collecting large
items.
If it was refinished, it might look nice for use as a pulpit again in a
historic church. The donor is ok with us passing it along to another non
profit group, so contact us if your organization is interested in obtaining
it. It is offered free.
