Photograph conservator Gawain Weaver will lead this 3-day workshop, an intr
oduction to the history, identification, and preservation of photographic m
aterials. Participants will acquire hands-on identification skills and lear
n practical photograph preservation techniques. Using handheld 60x microsco
pes and a large set of photographic and photomechanical samples, they will
learn how a variety of processes were created, why they look the way they d
o, and how they deteriorate. Knowledge about photographic processes is esse
ntial to their preservation and leads to a greater appreciation of the aest
hetics and history of photographic prints. Preservation topics include enc
losures, handling guidelines, environmental monitoring, the effects of temp
erature and relative humidity on collections, and the importance of cold st
orage for certain photographic materials.
Advanced registration required by September 21, 2015. Please direct any qu
