New author Dustyn Dubuque available for talks at your organization

Dustyn Dubuque's new nonfiction title, "How Newell Burch Survived Andersonv ille Prison, Among the First to Arrive and Last to Leave." focuses on a sel fless Wisconsin man who survived months at the notorious Andersonville Pris on.

Newell Burch was a man of great integrity and selflessness. As a young boy from New York, he enlisted in the Civil War to fight for the Union Army. Bu rch spent most of his time in the Civil War as a prisoner of war. He kept a
diary of his daily life as a soldier. When he completed a bound book, he m ailed it home. Thus, we have a primary account of his experiences, which is
 unusual.

Burch spent 21 months as a prisoner of war, in Belle Island and Andersonvil le prisons. Andersonville, Georgia, was home to what many call the "deadlie st" prisoner of war cap during the Civil War. More than 45,000 Union soldie rs were imprisoned at Andersonville with more than 13,000 dying inside its walls. Conditions were deplorable: prisoners had poor shelter, fed little f ood, and had very little for clothing.

Burch wrote all about these experiences, surviving such a traumatic ordeal.
Upon his release, he met his wife in Cincinnati until they moved to Menomo nie in 1869 where he opened the Burch Mercantile Co. and worked for the Kna pp, Stout and Company Co. Burch is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Menomoni e.

Dubuque, a Dunn County native, learned of Newell Burch's diary from working
at the Dunn County Historical Society (DCHS) which he learned had a digita l copy of the diary and other physical items of Burch's. The diaries became
the subject of Dubuque's master's thesis completed at UW-Eau Claire. When finished, Dubuque thought Newell's story is one that many people would find
interesting and worked closely with Monarch Tree Publishing to share it wi th the public. Books can also be ordered at monarchtreepublishing.com<http
