Creators, Collectors & Communities
Student Research Symposium & Exhibit Reception
From intricately carved immigrant trunks to troll kitsch, the Driftless Historium’s first special exhibit “Creators, Collectors & Community,” uses examples of local artistic expression through time to explore the people and ideas that have shaped the cultural identity of the Mount Horeb area.
Over the last several semesters, UW-Madison students, under the leadership of Art History and Material Cultural Professor Ann Smart Martin, partnered with the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society on this exhibit -a collaboration that offered new perspectives and posited intriguing larger-world connections.

On Saturday, September 9, the Driftless Historium (100 S 2nd St, Mt Horeb) will host a Student Research Symposium & Reception, a companion event highlighting the new museum’s inaugural exhibit. At 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 1:30p.m. and 2:20 p.m., four UW-Madison students will present research and findings associated with their work on this Wisconsin Humanities Council-supported project. Following the presentations, the students will serve as hosts of an exhibit reception that will continue until the Historium’s 4:00 p.m. close.
Coffee and bottled water will be available throughout the day, with a selection of wine and cheese offered to guests of the afternoon exhibit reception. Event goers are encouraged to patronize Mount Horeb’s outstanding downtown eating establishments or gift shops during the scheduled lunch break from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
To view the day’s forthcoming schedule of speakers and for other event details, visit the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society’s Facebook or web page, email mthorebhistory@mhtc.net or call 608-437-6486.
The exhibit "Creators, Collectors & Communities," the impetus for this symposium, was funded in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council, with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
