In January of 1982 six local history museums in Dodge County got together to
form a group called the Dodge County Affiliated Historical Societies. It
has been in existence ever since and has expanded to fifteen local
historical societies. It was agreed that each museum would take turns in
hosting a meeting. We usually meet at a local restaurant with about 40 to
50 people present for lunch and hold a meeting afterward, with each society
present reporting what they have done since the last meeting and what their
future plans might be. If a particular society can't have representation at
the meeting, we request that they file a report to the host museum, which is
read at the meeting. Many time at these meetings an artifact that was
donated to one museum will be given to a museum where it has more
significance. Also, discussed might be issues common with local history
museums. As part of the meeting we usually have a guest speaker. It might
be a local historian reporting on history from their town or we have had
representatives from the state historical society also give a talk.
Sometimes the meetings are held at a local fire department or an American
Legion Hall, whichever is convenient. The group originally met 4 times a
year; however, that has been reduced to twice a year, in spring and fall.
Overall, we have found it to be beneficial for everyone involved.

Subject: County or regional meetings, alliances?
Hello all,
The field services staff are interested in creating a list of groups that
are meeting at a county, regional, or other local "level" on a regular basis
to discuss common goals, issues, and to collaborate on programs, exhibits,
or other projects.
If you are involved in such a group, please email me some basic info about
your group and when/where you meet. We hope to create a directory of such
alliances so we can better connect our local history community!
Thank you,
Janet
