How did they respond as loyal citizens at a time when they didn't even have the right to vote? Find out about the women who shored up home front support and the ones who braved German u-boats to cross the Atlantic to work in England and France as journalists, nurses, telephone operators, and entertainers.

Theresa Kaminski earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her specialty is American women's history, and she has published three books on women and war: Prisoners in Paradise, Citizen of Empire, and Angels of the Underground. She is currently Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Kaminski explores how Herold’s extraordinary experiences during WWI and WWII—including three years as a prisoner of war—forever afterward impacted her notions of citizenship and patriotism.
