[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/31adc7d2fb6e487916f8d1bec/images/4f0e8af3-e8 4b-472b-b64f-d4773080aa85.jpg] Shortly after the United States entered the European War in April 1917, Wis consin became known as America’s “Traitor State.” Its large proporti on of German citizens, active Socialist party, and anti-war Senator Robert La Follette (born just outside of Mount Horeb, in the Town of Primrose), he lped create this perception. Some Wisconsinites sought to prove their loya lty and patriotism through sacrifice and hard work; others resorted to vigi lantism. Leslie Bellais will explore how WI citizens experienced the state
’s tension-filled atmosphere during the 18 months America participated in
 World War I.

 Curator of Costumes & Textiles, with her purview expanded in 2014 to the c are and interpretation other artifacts related to domestic life and women
’s history via her new role as the Museum’s Curator of Social History. In 2004 Leslie returned to graduate school to work on her Ph.D. in American
 history and material culture at the University of Wisconsin. She is curren tly working on her dissertation—also entitled, “Traitor State! A Crisi s of Loyalty in World War I Wisconsin,” which will directly inform her pr esentation.
