and unfiltered glimpse into the lives of the Badger State's frontiersmen a nd women.

From the mid-1830s through the 1850s, more than a half million people settl ed in Wisconsin. While traveling in ships and wagons, establishing homes an d forming new communities, these men, women and children recorded their exp eriences in letters, diaries and newspaper articles. Stevens sorted through
and stitched together these moving and relatable first-person accounts to provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of these early settlers.

? Or an isolated young wife living far from the emotional and physical supp ort of friends and family?

Their words reveal fears, joys, frustrations and hopes for a new life in th is new place--and, as woven together by Stevens, provide a fascinating narr ative that deepens our ability to understand and empathize with Wisconsin's
 early pioneers.
