The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society is proud to host accomplished journ
alist and author Bill Stokes, who will read brief excerpts from his recentl
y published historical fiction work, "Margaret's War." He will also discuss
the true history of the novel's setting, Barron County's WWII German POW c
amp --and other POW camps in Wisconsin.
This event will take place in the Historium's Community Education Room on T
hursday, August 29 at 6:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Reservatio
ns are not required.
Books will be available for sale and signing by the author.

Bill Stokes (right) grew up on a small dairy farm between Barron and Rice L
ake, Wisconsin. He began his official writing career as an outdoor writer a
nd general reporter for the Stevens Point Daily Journal. From there, his il
lustrious career included residencies with the Wisconsin State Journal (196
1-1969), the Milwaukee Journal (1969-1982) and the Chicago Tribune (1982-19
93), followed by a well-deserved retirement augmented with free-lance proje
cts.
During his long journalism career, Bill won several awards, including the E
rnie Pyle Memorial Award from Scripps-Howard News Service in 1972 and the D
istinguished Service to Journalism Award in 1983. His work has appeared in
many national publications, among them Readers Digest, Outdoor Life and Spo
rts Afield. He has compiled three anthologies of his newspaper writing and
authored two children’s books.
