This Thursday, Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office archaeologists
will tell the fascinating story of how a search for the traces of a lost 19
th century private port, Ronk's Pier, grew to a much larger research projec
t of similar piers along the Lake Michigan shoreline and the investigation
of a cultural landscape of southeastern Wisconsin. In the mid to late 19th
century, small communities like the Town of Belgium, relied on a network of
privately owned piers, feeder roads, and sailing vessels that moved goods
from lake to shore and back again allowing them to import manufactured good
s while exporting lumber, stone, and agricultural products to the growing c
ities of the Great Lakes. You will learn about this network of private pier
s and the changes that eventually led to the abandonment of these "ghost po
rts."
